Oakmerefield is a reference on arboriculture and forest management maintained in Brno, South Moravia.
Oakmerefield gathers practical notes on tree care and forest management as practised across the Czech Republic. The content draws on field experience, published research, and the regulatory framework established by Act No. 289/1995 Coll. (the Czech Forest Act) and its related decrees.
The focus is narrow by design: arboriculture — the cultivation, management, and study of individual trees and woody plants — and close-to-nature silviculture, the forest management philosophy increasingly adopted by Czech state and private forest owners following the bark beetle crisis of the late 2010s.
Between 2017 and 2022, the Czech Republic lost millions of cubic metres of spruce timber to Ips typographus (European spruce bark beetle) and associated pathogens, accelerated by drought stress. The scale of salvage felling transformed entire landscapes — particularly in the highlands of Vysočina, Šumava, and the Jeseníky — and reopened long-standing debates about monoculture forestry, species composition, and rotation lengths.
That context shapes much of what appears here. Questions about which species to plant, how to thin a young stand, and when to remove a stressed urban tree are not abstract. They carry real consequences for watershed function, carbon storage, biodiversity, and the livelihoods of those who work in the forest sector.
This resource does not cover timber trading, log pricing, or investment in forest land. It does not address topics outside the Czech Republic except where international comparison is directly relevant to a local question.
